Used Wii games -- can you play them online?

I'm new to console gaming. Do any of the Wii games require you to register a CD key online, preventing people from playing used games online? (I'm interested in the sports games.)

Is there any reason to buy a new game instead of a used one in those regards?

Not in the wii, and I believe there only one game on the 360/ps3 that does this. Most companies instead choose to enable "free" DLC for people with a new game key, but don't take away features if it's used. The wii DLC is almost non-existent so there's no game that even does this on the wii.

Long story short: buying used is rarely an issue period, but is even less so on the wii.

You will be fine buying used games for Wii. Same w/ 360 and PS3. Games on consoles don't have CD keys like their PC counterparts.

Like gorcorps mentioned, console games sometimes come with a "key" to allow you to download some extra content. Those keys are, once used, are tied to that person's profile account (xbox uses their live service, PS3 has the PSN, etc).

Madden 11 is the only console game I know of that has a one-time-use code to access online multiplayer. If you buy it used, you will have to pay an extra $10 to get online. Not sure if this is also present in the Wii version or if it's only for the PS3/360 version.

The other game is the most recent SOCOM, but that's for the PSP.

Another thing to consider is whether the servers are still running. A sports game from a year or two ago might not let you play online aymore, new or used.

Thanks for your help guys. That really sucks--that games can become so easily outdated by the loss of online multiplayer. Does the 2K company do that to their games? (I'm interested in NHL 2k10.) Do the Madden games do that?

I gave a copy of NHL 2K10 for the Wii to my nephews last year and the manual stated the servers would go down in November of 2010. I can't confirm whether they actually have or not.

EA is pretty ruthless about turning off the servers for it's older games. We should be hearing an announcement about Madden NFL 10 going offline any day now.

<Sigh>. This is just one more reason why PC gaming is superior to console gaming; people are still playing the original Unreal Tournament (released in 1999) online today.

We bought the Wii mostly because my wife liked the physically involving aspects of it. I guess that's mostly what it will be for; interactive exercise. I'll probably still end up getting a hockey game cause it's still fun to play against the computer, but the online multiplayer issues are disappointing. (Pay us $60/year to play online.)
