Used vehicle advice

I live in Wisconsin and have a 97 Dodge Ram long bed (2WD) pickup (KBB private party value $2400). In another year I will be moving to a different college (Madison) and will need to get a smaller vehicle that actually fits in a parking spot.

Ideally I would get a Jeep, but a 89 costs as much as my 97. My requirements are under 6k and have excellent snow capabilities. Oh yeah, and not a girl car.

Suggestions?

You don't need a car in Madison. Great city bus service and you can always mooch a ride. Save big bucks w/ no car. Get a bicycle instead.

To say a car is not needed is BS. Yeah, you may not need one on campus, but you will need one otherwise. At the very least I will be driving from Madison to Oshkosh once a month.

Used Echo? Front wheeldrive is good in the snow.

EDIT: Can't wait for this to turn into a 4WD vs 2WD thread. it's Inevevitabable

That's true. It's not too tough to get by with no car around here. That being said, I think I'll be getting a car before next year, too. I won't have a roommate's car to borrow to go grocery shopping then, and grocery shopping with no car sucks.

Let me sum it up: While a 2WD (f) can handle well on the snow, a good 4WD will beat it. There, over, done.

$40/month roundtrip on Greyhound vs. how much to keep and feed a car? Even renting a car to make a monthly run to Oshkosh is cheaper than owning one. Think about it anyway.

What does "beat it" mean? I bet you I can use the same public roads you use with 2WD.

EDIT: When in college, I spent 5+ motnhs a year driving on snow. Litterally. The roads were never cleared. You drove on packed snow. I had a 2WD truck with some weight in the bed and quite honestly, I was more mobile than probably 90% of the vehicles on the road.

EDIT 2: I re-read your comment and got overdefensive. You are right in the end.... 4WD>2WD. But in most cases, people simply don't need 4WD. I don't care where you live.
