I need a couch for my dorm room REALLY BAD. Sucks having people over and only having chairs for them to sit on, it's harder to make moves on girls that way too....So I need a couch. Should I buy a used or new one...I have maybe $300-$400 tops to spend, but I'd rather have some of that money for beverages.

Go to goodwill/salvation army and pick one up for $50 or so. You'd be surprised at how nice some of the stuff is there.

Lord knows I've dropped off some stuff that was in excellent condition. I just could get more for it by writing it off as a charitble contribution than I could selling it outright.

Umm... used? From fresh-senior year we had about 8 different used couches. Good enough quality, clean, and didnt cost us a dime.

used for sure.. but you must have the biggest dorm room in the history of dorm rooms if you can fit a couch in it.. my friend's dorm room barely had enough room for me to sleep on their floor

Even a dinky dorm room can be made big if you can build a loft into it. Lofted beds can effectively make a second floor out of any dorm room.

I got mine for $20. Do NOT spend very much money on a dorm couch because it will go through alot. That's just my experience, anywho.

To echo everyone else, go used. My room has a nice used futon in it that gets a lot of use, and it was only 30 bucks. Best part was that one of my roomates paid for the whole thing himself just so that he could take it back with him once the year ended. Free futon=good.

I'd go with the Salvation army idea. Or drive around on trash night and see what you can pick up. Just make sure to take a good look at it and a good whiff of it before you get it into your dorm room ;)

Anything you could pick up for 300 is probably only as good as what you could get at sal army, considering the fact that it WILL get trashed, whether you intend for it to or not.

Additionally, if you only pay 30-50 dollars for it, at the end of the year you can just toss it and not have to worry about finding someone to take it or drag it home.

With your 300-400 dollar budget, you could buy a couch for every year you live in the dorms, easily.

I often wondered if it would be worth while you rent some storage space near a campus, and at the end of the year pick up all the couches and furniture people throw away, and then at the start of the next year sell them. I'm sure it would cover the cost of the storage unit, and make some on the side. Oh well. I'll let someone else find out if it'd work :)

i'm going to vote new.. but that's me.. i wouldn't let it get f*@#$ to hell.

then again, this really is only a dorm room... so hit up the thirft shops! or find friends getting rid of couches... we gave our old one to my friend (i didn't have any room for it anywhere and we needed space at home)
