I have several friends who want to buy laptops for their kids who are going to begin college this fall. They are not computer people, and do not want gaming laptops.

If they can run W98SE and Office 97 that should be sufficient. Least money spent should be fine.

Yes....I know ebay, For Sale/Trade, etc., but, these are people that will need a 30 to 90 day warranty and, I do NOT want to be providing support for them. The warranty, and then they are on their own.

Compaq/HP also has some sub $700 laptops that are slightly better spec'd than the dell's base model. (they use athlon XP's).

Check the Hot Deals forum. There is a Toshiba celeron laptop (it'll run win95/98/2k/xp along with office) for around $599 after rebates.
I have a Toshiba laptop I got for 500 AR from black friday deals. Works great, and it was only a $100 more than a used P3. Mine's a Celeron 2.4, 256mb ram, 30gb HD.
With deals on laptops running in the 500-700 range, personally I think it's better to spend the extra $100-200 (and go through the hassle with rebates, just be sure to make copies of everything you send) to get something new and under warranty.
