Used Honda Accord or Toyota Camry under $7,000 ???

Originally I had planned on buying a brand new 2002 or 2003 Honda Accord or Toyota Camry in the near future. All of the sudden I realize I could probably find a still perfectly functioning used car for half the price of a new one. I would prefer to pay between $5,000 - $7,000 for a used Honda Civic or Honda Accord with low mileage, automatic, 4 door. It doesn't need to have a spoiler or be riced up, just something in excellent condition and 100% reliable (this excludes Hyundai's obviously).

So what year used Civic/Accords are best?
How much should that year cost?
How many miles per year is good?

I'll probably be checking OregonLive.com and The Oregonian newspaper for listings.

Ross... you buy a civic and I am personally coming to oregon... lolol.

/me thinks I should buy a Civic.

Why not get a used Hynduai Sonata??

That's NOT even funny! Ok well kinda. Because it would cost to much to tow out of the scrap yard?

:D

Early to mid 90's Accord would be good.

For example, drop a 1994 Accord EX Sedan, Auto, 75,000 miles into KBB & you come up at around $7.5K. Should be a nice car with another 100,000+ miles of life left if you really want to keep it that long. Up the mileage to 90,000, & you're well under $7K.

Try the lower trim levels as well, EX is the top trim level.

Also, on the Accord vs. Civic debate... Get the Accord. I test drove two Hondas when I was looking for a car. One was a '91 Civic, one was the '89 Accord I bought. The Accord was MUCH more ... solid feeling, for lack of a better term, even though it was two years older.

B/C I would not recommend he do that. :)

To all who come in here.. Thank you Ross for making me Mr Hyundai.. :) ( and all the nice ppl who PM'd me, welcome to the dark side :) ...even tho I have owned many other makes and right at this moment also own another make. Not to metion will be buying yet another new car next year and a nissan is in the running..

Now, as to Ross's situation... I hate used cars.. only one I ever bought was my very first car.. ( a toyota ) I know you save money, and that is Ross' middle name, but nothing like picking out your very own car, and o the smell.. anyhoo... look into a 98 accord Ross, if only honDuh is what you be looking into..

Reliability *snicker* Honduh came in 6th in DR's in 2000 lol.

Still, they are wonderful cars!!

I'll betcha that if we get a mod to trace your IP you're posting from Hyundai USA, you must be their new vice president of marketing.

I think Accords from 98 or later would be a good buy. Personally I wouldn't buy a civic, too small for me (i'm kinda tall) ;)

What is it with 98 Accords? Was there some huge leap from 97 to 98 Accord?

97-98 was when they made the new design, the one you see alot on the streets.

Just don't get White!! They are ugly!!

To you people who are suggesting late model Accords, they don't fit in his price range!

Yes, they're nice cars. I wish I could afford one.

But KBB lists a 98 Accord EX auto, with 40,000 miles at roughly $15,000. That's more than double the upper limit of his price range.

Yeah I just noticed the 1998 Honda Accord LX goes for $12,244 according to Edmunds.com

How accurate is that price point? If I find one with low miles, one owner, what would a normal person ask for that?

How many miles is good for a 1998 Accord?

Your money will be better spent on an Accord or Camry whether it is used or new. Although reliable cars, Civic's are kinda weak and pretty much a waste of your money. Theyre known for their economical value and what not, but nowadays, cars are so expensive that theyre pretty much overpriced.

I like the used Accords made in 94, they have the trihorizontal-lined rear lights. I wouldnt buy anything with more than 65000 miles. The newer, more recent style of Accords that were started in 98 are nice too, but I like the 94 better...and they'll be cheaper since theyre older. OH, make sure you get the EX which is more loaded...if i could do it over again, i wouldnt have bought my LX...its a lil skimpy on the trimmings.

Camrys are very solid. Everyone in my family has a Camry, all models from 80 til the current ones. Those cars never have a problem, but theyre kinda familyish/grandmaish.

I think probably the sensible thing to do would be save up a huge downpayment of $6-7k then finance the other $10,000 this is assuming I can find a 2002 Honda Accord loss leader in the paper which probably isn't that difficult.

Financing $10,000 is a lot easier to swallow than $17,000

Viper - Which Honda dealerships do you recommend or have heard from word of mouth that have half a spine?

Well screw the low miles theory I tried searching ALL 1994 Honda Accords with less than 70,000 miles and OregonLive.com found NONE!

I dunno about dealers, most weren't all that pleased to talk to me due to my low budget (For God's sake I was barely 18, WTF do they expect?). The Accord was from a small non-affiliated dealer, & the Civic was owned by a family friend.

I've got a 1995 Honda Accord with less than 60,000 miles. The automatic transmission doesn't shift as smoothly as it used to and the engine isn't as quiet, but those are the only problems I've had with it. I've still got the original tires as well.

you want mine?? have an 89 accord.. no problems.. so you can go for any year.. jsut make sure that the timing belt has been changed on an older car(90+).. that can be expensive to get done.

Timing belts are expensive but how much do they average for a 90's Accord?
