So im bidding at the Bestbuy Employee Auction site...
and i found a used/unknown HK AVR-254...

Only comes with the receiver...

Now i have the same receiver in my living room...

Would $133 be worth owning this as a backup and receiver for my gaming room?
Although i rack about 10hrs/month of gaming, i know pretty sad!

Cant decide wether its worth it.

For $133 it's a very nice receiver. Their power ratings look less than flattering, but realize that they are much more realistic than most other brands. I've got an HK-247 which is the year earlier version of the 254. They are one of the sleeker looking receivers out there, are well built, have preouts, and easy to use onscreen setups.

I think they had some firmware issues up front that caused some bugs, may want to check on that and see if you can update it/if it's been updated.

But for $133 it would be a stellar "backup" receiver.

Well like i said,i've already got one as a full-time receiver...

yeah, and i just stay away from HDMI as much as possible...

Only have 1 HD source anyway.

Pretty decent receivers, they would be worth a lot more if there wasn't such a flood of them recently (ebay). All you'll need for the firmware update is a serial cable - software is on the h/k site. Most of the problems listed in an avsforums thread with this series have been fixed, although the avr-254 I got last week had 2008 firmware on it (easy to check).

Personally, I wouldn't be hooking these up to any expensive speakers though - as much as I like h/k, the complete lack of speaker protection relays just doesn't sit well with me. :hmm:
