Used ceramique, CPU is running really hot

Yesterday I tried out Ceramique on a Palomino XP 1800+. Previously I've used arctic silver. I put it on according to the directions on the Ceramique instruction page. Upon boot, the CPU's temp skyrocketed into the upper 70C's so I shut it off and reapplied the ceramique. I got similar results. I found if I applied a little pressure downwards on the heatsink, the temperature dropped tremendously. I tried both the "put a small dab on the core and squish the HSF on" and "spread" methods of putting the Ceramique on but to no avail. Right now I'm running at a lower 1.1 GHz to keep it cool, and the CPU is still 66C idle. I ruled out the possibility of the temperature probe being at fault because if the CPU is run at stock settings WinXP BSODs on boot and sometimes BIOS fails as well. Also, the temperature fluctuates with CPU load correctly Normally I see temps of around 50C idle or less. Any idea whats going on?

Sounds like your heatsink isn't contacting the core properly/completely, only other thing comes to mind is thermal build-up from using too much? I've never had any problem with Ceramique' beyond the adhesive effect I've gotten with a IHS, so I'm confident that if it's not fake Ceramique' it isn't the paste itself.

I tried various amounts of ceramique to see if that was the problem. I used it on an XP 2200+ before and it worked fine.

Just bend the clips on your heatsink a little, so it will put more downward pressure on the cpu, and you should be fine.

Thanks for bringing the HSF clip to my attention! That helped a lot. In fact, I removed the clip to clean the HSF the first time and did not notice I put the clip on backwards. The clip was then applying pressure off-center to the CPU die, so part of the CPU was getting hot. Temps are now under 46c idle, 52c loaded

Edit: and the mentioned temps may drop some after the ceramique "breaks in" more.

Just for a Heads Up, All I use is the ceramique if thats spelled right.. To me, Paste is to fill in the minute grooves that the naked eye can't see, as to heat transfer, all the hype of /"Use this Brand"..etc, to me is nothing but a bunch of Bull, and making someone gobbs of $$ I did some testing a long time ago, and published my results at overclockers,( as at the time I was into that type of thing), and the variation from 1 type of paste to another, using a base line of Radio shack smear, was so minimal, it would make 1 laugh.

Good for you. But I personally will continue to use a quality thermal compound like AS5 or Ceramique, for the warm fuzzies if nothing else.

No warm fuzzies here.... my Barton is a cool fuzzy AS5 cool and fuzzy
