Hey everyone,

I don't really know very much about cars, but I'd like to get a used car that's preferably not too expensive since I'm a college student. Something that has decent range/speed, and good mpg. I don't want a lemon! ;)
What would you guys recommend? Brand/etc?

not more than $1500 US and the year doesn't matter, as long as the car fits the above criteria. Like I said, I don't know very much about cars :)

I forgot which year had problems but a 1988 Honda Civic or later should work just fine or a Toyota Corollo. Unfortunately your options are VERY limited with a budget of $1,500 I'd say save up at least $3,000 - $4,000 and you can get a good, reliable, fuel efficient Civic or Corolla which will last you years to come.

One of the best new and used car resources on the web is Edmunds.com, since your budget is so small check your local newspaper for used Honda or Toyota's for sale.

I recently sold my 1989 ford taurus gl wagon 3.0L v6 with 94k miles for only 1700. It had some body damage on the back (I ran into a pole backing up at 35 mph). It ran perfectly fine- and that is low mileage for a a 1989. I bought an acura integra for 7300, my reccomendation to you would be to look for an old import like a honda or toyota, you can find old accords cheap those are fairly safe, reliable, fuel efficient.. you might even be able to get an old 88 integra or something, CR rated it the best used car you could buy

When you buy a used car, be prepared to spend at least a few hundred on maintenance and repairs in the coming years. Not to mention fuel and insurance bills. All too often people tend to forget that used cars (usually sold with short or no warranty) will have problems. Make sure you get the car checked out by a trusted mechanic to make sure its safe. Knowing several people in the used car industry, hs/college kids, certain races, and single women are preyed upon in the most horrible ways. Be careful, and you may find some bargains.

For $1500 you can get a very nice bicycle. Also consider a motorcycle or waiting until you have more money.
