Used cars from rental companies

What are some of the pros and cons of buying used cars from rental companies? They seem to be reasonably well kept, have some extra features up from the base-models/higher trim level, and are kept clean and so on, all at lower than average prices.

Likely more mileage but its probably 90% highway.

Still, there must be some catch...

Uhh... There are pro's?

Drive it like a rental! 😀 There is a quote around here about someone's grandma doing burnouts in her rental.

Buying rental cars is like marrying a hooker. One body been to a million hands 😛

Between myself and two other members of my family we have owned 4 previous rentals. All worked flawlessly for many miles (two still owned and all were GM cars). The cars were purchased from Budget and Enterprise.

I would say the main con is selection. You may simply not find a car you want to own and if you do, you won't get a lot of options or much of a selection (when compared to buying new from a dealer).

Of course you can usually get them dirt cheap. However, with incentives the way they are these days it may be better to buy a new car is some cases. You can always ask the place you are buying from if you can have a mechanic check the car out (compression check, oil analysis).

Well besides the fact that I do everything I can within the terms of the rental agreement to destroy the car, they also just plain stink. I mean they smell bad. If it isn't the smell of smoke, it's the smell of that crap they put in there to cover up the smell of smoke. Horrendous, and I don't know if that would ever come out.

I found out after I bought it that my Expedition was from a rental fleet of some sort.

I bought it about 3 years ago with 48k miles on it, it just turned 150k with no major problems, just a few piddly things have gone wrong. Still starts everyday and runs like a.....well it runs 😛

Its been a good truck, but trucks tend to put up with abuse better than cars do.
