I've been starting to look for a relatively cheap commuter car that gets good gas mileage and am looking for suggestions. This is out of my realm as I currently own two vehicles, each with a V8.

Some guidelines I've been trying to stick with are:
30+ MPG
Approx. $6,000-$7,000
Reliable

I've been looking a lot at Chevy Cobalts as they seem to fit the bill. I don't know how I feel about foreign cars, especially since I don't have any shops in close proximity to service it in case something happens, but I'm not completely against it.

What do you guys think?

One of the newer Ford Focuses with the 2.0 Duratec engine. Hits 30mpg+ and is chain timed thus no timing belt worries.
Do not get one of the older Focuses with the 2.0 SPI or Zetec engines, not as reliable or efficient as the Duratec.
IIRC the Duratec became the standard motor in 2005.

Jetta TDI. You should be able to get a '00-01 model for about $7000. Mechanically, the car will be extraordinarily reliable as long as the timing belt has 55,000 mile service. Electrical gremlins (windows and such) can be an issue though. Expect 38-48mpg.
