Used car recommendations

My wife's going back to work in a couple of weeks, and we're looking for a solid automatic commuter under $12k that's also relatively easy to use a carseat in (no 2-doors).

Any recommendations (or cars+years to avoid)? My original thinking is a well-equipped Protege but they seem hard to find. Stiffer suspension is nice, but we don't need a ton of power - she stays within ten of the speed limit.

We've been looking at the civic as well - right now it's the fallback if we can't find a protege (mainly because of the price difference used).

We looked at a corolla but the back seat seemed smaller than the civic - tough to put the kid in the carseat.

you could also try a Nissan Altima (larger then civic and corrolla) or Toyota Camry. For 12k you could probably find one.
