I need a new car and I was looking for suggestions. I have about 6K to spend plus or minus. I need some with good mpg and something that will be very safe. Although I am still young, I could care less about sportyness or image. Also I would prefer something that is very quiet inside. In my current civic, I struggle to carry a conversation over 75 mph. Any suggestions/ personal experience with a certain model?

Saab 9-5.

just get it checked by a mechanic before you purchase it.

great mileage, fun, comfy as hell, and safe as hell.

yep, like I said in the other tread, the big ford or mercury is worth looking at

pay for the gas and have it all, the overall cost of the big machine is lower than you think

the phrase is 'i could NOT care less...'

if you could care less, then you do care.

I'm a japanese fan but I think in your range with those requirements, you should look at... Chevy Impalas. If you look around you'll be able to find one with 60-70k on the clock. To go with an Accord or Camry in that price range you would be looking at cars with a lot more miles. If you're a ford person than look at Tauruses, but I put GM over them personally. Another option would ber the 98-01 or 02 Nissan Altimas, that would be a good choice.

Any Gm midsize with the 3800 V6, Impalas, Grand Prixs, Regals, Olds Intrigue?

on this suggestion, i suggest looking at the Grand Prix GTP.

swap a smaller pulley on the SC, and that car can be FAST

You can have my newly painted 88 Firebird for $3K. Has a new motor, trans, gas tank, pump, brakes, and tires and more ;)
Needs O2 Sensor (may be no muffler related) and new headliner. Thats it shes ready to give you another 100,000 miles and cheap parts and repair costs. Not to bad on gas either if you keep your foot out of it. Last big trip 4 hours away averaged 30mpg because of the way it is geared.

Cant say it is quiet with straight exhaust from the cat back but with the extra 3K Im sure you can put a muffler back on and pocket the other $2700 ;)

I'd recommend a used Lexus ES300 (96-97ish). Very quiet and a step above the Accord and Camry. I've seen a few for 6k in decent condition.

Thats sometimes is the worst car you can buy because it only was driven a few miles every day at 25 easy miles an hour. All that carbon build up is worse for a car then say one thats beat every day. That carbon builds up on every enternal part and next thing you know your valves are not closing right or your cat converter is clogged, you computer parts like O2 is messed up.

I have bought plenty of old people cars myself and first thing I would do for a week is floor it from a stop everytime and watch the black smoke pour out of the exhaust. I even bought one honda that was driven a mile a day for years that was missing really bad. Our in house mechanic swore up and down it was in need of a valve job. He wasnt going to buy it for $100 but I had to problem. And after beating the car on the trip back when I finnaly made it back to my fathers dealership it was running like a new car. The mechanic was pissed and tried to have me give the car to him but I wouldnt. Instead cleaned it up and sold it the next day for $900.

But anyway getting away from my point. See older cars look great on the outside but if you got to test drive it have someone follow behind you and floor it several times from a stoped position and let them tell you what color and how bad the smoke is coming out of the tail pipe. White or tons of black smoke you may be asking for more trouble down the like with carbon fouled up stuff.
