well i havent been car shopping in almost 10 years. my previous vehicle, a 12yr old civic, was everything i wanted in a car. reliable, got very good gas mileage and retained resale value compared to other brands. it served me well until meeting an unfortunate end recently Text. in all these years it had only 1 problem and was the driver side motor that operated the window went out. other than that, nothing else needed fixing. and i especially liked how it got almost 40mpg.

immediately after the accident, i thought i'd just get another civic. my previous one was very good to me and never let me down.. however i dont have much $ to work with, and those high resale values have also been a curse to me.

can anyone recommend an alternative? closest thing similar i've found so far is a vw jetta tdi. however i've read some concerns of lesser reliability and also more expensive maintenance. i have no knowledge of how much is involved taking care of a diesel engine.

also, a hypothetical question: assuming the price is equal:

a 4 year old car with 80,000 miles
an 8 year old car with 40,000 miles

which would be the safer, more reliable (less prone to breaking) to choose? if anyone has opinions please give your reasons for which you think would be better.

thanks

I would not get a VW used car, period. But between those two, I'd get the 4 year old.
VW jetta TDI is a commuter car, not a weekend/summer toy, so seeing 5K miles per year on one would raise a lot of red flags with me.

It depends on the good/bad ratio of mixed reviews, since reliability is a statistical measure. The other question is the cost to fix and availability of parts if stuff does go wrong.

well in regards to jetta/passat.. from what i've read is either you get a good one and it lasts and holds up well, or.. well the opposite lol
i'm looking for something around 2004-ish. seems like quality fluctuated, for example 03 model was so-so, the 04 model was good, the 05 was back to so-so.
i remember when sold as new, the vw vehicles were more expensive than the civics... but the used civics are now more expensive than the used vw ones
