Looking to spend about 300-350 on a new digital camera. Now... looking at the market, I really want the S3 from Canon, but for that money I can get the body of a Canon 10d, which I know would last longer and would take better pictures if I got the right lens...

Suggestions please :)

IF you know the 10D is good - and has a moderate amount of clicks - (around 0-20,000) - I'd go for it.
You'll get better dynamic range, etc.

However, to get the zoom range of the S3 - you'll have to pony up lots of dollars for lenses.

I notice that the memory the 10d takes is Compact Flash...

I wonder if transferring files on the S3 is quicker...

More than likely you will be using a usb card reader. Probably about the same. I would go for the 10D. Get a nice lens which you can keep for when you grab a 40D.

10D hands down.
I went from a superzoom to a DSLR, and the quality difference is night and day.
Who cares that you can get nice closeups with the superzoom when the image is soft, grainy, blown out highlights(poor dynamic range), and shoddy colors?
Superzooms, while a nice PS camera, doesn't hold a candle to a DSLR

The 10D is much better than the original Digital Rebel, especially if you want to take a lot of action shots. The supposed AI Servo you can get with the Rebel is very iffy, but more consistent with the 10D. The newer Rebels offer full-time AI Servo though, so they are on par with the 10D in that area at least. The 10D would also give you an ISO of 3200 instead of the 1600 with the Rebel.

10D hands down. If you wait a couple years I'll sell you my 20D when I move up to the EOS 1d of the time.
