HeI will buy my first dslr camera. First i didnt want to spend much. So i jumped in craigslist. And i found 2 good deals.
.
I talked down the price on canon Eos Xs to $250. It is 2months old. Comes stock len, lens, paperwork etc.

And later on i found nikon d90 with 3x tamron lens. 1 lens 28-80mm(3.5-22) 1lens 75-300(4-36) and otherone 22mm, and price is $650
, also includes extra battery.
What i am gonna use for? For starters taking pics. May be headshots for friends etc. But eventually will shoot a short film. So should i go with cheaper Xs and buy a btetter camera with shooting movie option or expensive d90 and keep it for a while.

My othee choice is nikon d5100, but cant find one fits in my budget.

I checked that d3100, it doesnt have live view feature which looks like a must for shooting short film. I am leaning towards d90 for now and upgrade to d5100 down the road.

Otherwise i scored one for $390 on ebay but i decided to cancel the transaction due to not having live view.

Fron the Nikon Website "Digital-SLR camera Nikon D3100", #3 under Primary Features:

"Live view mode that allows users to use the camera monitor to easily frame still image or movies By simply rotating the live view switch, the view through the lens is displayed in the monitor, enabling immediate live view recording. This makes shooting feel more like shooting with a compact digital camera, easing the transition to digital-SLR for beginners. In addition, various information such as the shooting mode, time remaining (movie mode) and battery indicator, can be shown in the live view display."

I would really spend a little more money and find a used T2i. It will give you more of an experience of modern DSLR video.

You should be able to find one with the kit lens for ~$500 on cl.

The T2i Kanalua mentioned would also be a good choice. It does have a plug for an external mic, but lacks the autofocus during video recording that the D3100 has. The two are very equivalent cameras.

T2i Refurbished by Canon (better than new) for $640 w/ kit lens:

The D5100 is a great camera. Congrats.

I hope the 5100 has better construction than the 3100. The latter has a horrible feeling and makes me bleh as my hand gripped around the cheap plastic frame that feels weakly built and not solid.
