Use WinXP product key on new computer?

Is there a way to remove Windows Xp from a computer and install it using the same license on a new computer without having to buy another product key?

How does the other one get deactivated if I removed it? How does Microsoft know that I'm not trying to install it on two different computers?

It doesn't get deactivated. When you try to activate on the new computer you'll need to call microsoft and tell them that you're changing the computers that you installed it on. You'll then read them a really long number, and they'll read another one back to you that you type in. That activates windows on that computer, and now every time you want to install windows XP on there, you can just use the internet activation.

In my experience, it is still possible to install windows on the original computer and activate without calling microsoft even after you activate the second pc.

Check the license agreement that came with the original computer. If your version of XP is an OEM copy, you may not be able to transfer that license to a new computer. Non-OEM versions allow this, however.

I bought it "OEM" on newegg for a computer I built so I guess I won't be able to do that. Oh well. The product ID has "OEM" in it.

You may be fine. Again, double-check the license agreement.

If you use a windows XP for oem cd for builders you can reseal the machine and enter the new code.
You can get them from your local computer dealer or repair shop.
