This to me seems like extortion. If you need funds for emergency services then bill for it or tax it, but to tell someone who already uses something totally unrelated that you now want money for it because you are running out of money, that is just plain wrong. The way states are trying to get money is getting ridiculous. I wouldn't pay it if I lived there, they could take me to court.

MCLOUD, OK -- Several residents in McLoud are upset after the city announced a $17 water bill for residents who use a well. According to City Manager Larry Dillon, the small fee will help pay for emergency services such as police officers and fire fighters. Because of an old city ordinance, rural residents with in 100-yards of a water line didn't have to pay for those services; but because of a struggling economy, every dollar counts.

If local residents don't want to pay the fee they'll have to connect to the water line.

"I know nobody likes to pay extra bills, but it's a reality of life and you have to pay your way because there is no free ride anywhere," said Dillon.

If local residents don't pay the $17 monthly charge or hook up to the water line, city officials will fine them of $20 per day.

So, if you have a well on your private property you cannot use it unless you pay the city?

I think that mayor is going to have a tough November when they are up for reelection.

This should be the answer, but sadly most citizens don't follow through on it consistently. Every idiot who pushes the big government mantra and tries these kind of things to take money out of the pockets of citizens should be booted from office, never to get a job in public office again. If citizens did this consistently we'd have better government at all levels. As a citizenry, we ultimately get the government we deserve.......

easy fix. Just ask them to hook it up, cost a lot, and then just turn it off and hook your well back up. :)

From reading it just says you have to be hooked up, not use it. ;)

I'm sure they will be monitoring water usage after hook up.

So? They going to make a rule that you have to use a certain amount?

What I am saying is make it as hard for them as possible and then let the rage build up in the news and watch them either flip back to the old way or get voted out.

They are still going to charge a min fee just to have the city water connected. You'll pay one way or another

But it says "They'll have to hook up". I think that means they have to pay to hook up to the water line not the city

I lived at my last home for about 9 years. Nobody gave two shits about the water I was drinking out of my well during that time period. But when I went to sell, I had to pay to have the water tested.

I've been in this house over 22 years and you guessed it, my water did not have to be tested. Not until I sell.

The way it works here is when the well is first drilled you test it. After that you don't have to test it again even if you sell the property. My dads water is the best water I ever tasted, puts bottled water to shame. He is about 1000ft from the road. If they told him he had to get city water he would grab the shotgun :)

Those officials sure came up with a stupid way of getting the money.

They need an extra $1500/month to keep the police & fire dept going?

This doesn't make sense. If you're 50 yards away you don't pay for a water line you're not using anyway? If you're 150 you did? I don't understand. A well has nothing to do with a city water line.

Even if they covered the charge to hook it up - which they probably wouldn't - many cities (including mine) charge a "base charge" in addition to your metered usage. I pay something like $38 + usage for water.

Then again, I live in a retarded part of the country that wants to spend like California but not have income tax, so they have to find ways to get money from you....

you "should" get it tested every 5 years. but i think its kinda silly.

When we moved into the house we are in now we had it tested when we moved in. its been 5 years and no plans to get it tested.

And yes my well water is far better then any of my friends that live in town.

I'm reminded of the old joke commercial for Ma Bell. "We are losing money when people leave their phones off the hook, because long distance calls can't be connected. Therefore effective immediately the first five minutes will be free, but after that each minute your phone is off the hook you will be charged five cents."

When you are a government you have the power to make jokes come horribly true,

This is why states like Montana have water rights. You own the land, you own the water on it or under it.

if you live within the city districts and have a well, you are probably using the city's underground water supplies
