I know for a while people were told to disable it because some viruses would hide in the restore files. What is the feeling now?

Depends on why you are using it. If it is a faulty driver or program you installed, system restore can actually come in pretty handy. Malware infections that can not be cleaned up by your security tools would require a clean installation. A better solution to system restore is to just make regular image backups of your installation. Keep the first image you made after installation of XP and all your programs just in case your other image backups are infected.

You can purchase online backup space for important documents or you can buy drive imaging backup software like Ghost or True Image. If you have a maxtor or seagate hard drive, you can get true image for free.

Otherwise, get whichever of the two is the cheapest.
