Use laptop hard drive on PC tower?

My cousin's laptop fried and I need to get the data off of her hard drive for her.

It's an older Dell Inspiron - here's the info for the drive "Hard Drive, 4.8GB, IDE (Integrated Drive Electronics), 2.5" Form Factor, 9.5MM, Fujitsu Hornet 11"

2.5" Form Factor to a standard IDE cable is what I believe I'll need, any ideas?

you'll need a 2.5" to 3.5" ide adapter to enable you to connect the laptop hdd to the desktop.

Check the online retailers for the adapter. I don't know if you would find one in a local B&M.

$6.50 for a 44 to 40 pin adapter..... Fry's sells them off the shelf if you live near one.

So does S&W Electronics. Many local OEM shops carry them - if you are in a metro area. I would not be surprised if Radio Shack had them.

Best to get these on e*by if you need them piecemeal.

In general, how do you know which way the adapter fit on the hard drive? I made a mistake putting on the Laptop HD adapter on a PC and the power lead got fried on the adapter.

line up Pin1 on the HDD, line up pin 1 on the adapter. if there is nothing indicating pin1 on the adapter, use a cable to see which is pin1 on the adapter.
