Hey there,

I was curious. A while ago I thought I remember seeing something along the lines of this.
If I was to use a hub and crossover cable would be possible to share a WAN connection between
multiples computers ??
What I have is a 5 port hub and a crossover cable. If I was to hook the crossover cable to the
uplink port and then to my WAN connection (IE: Cable/DSL) would it be possible to
share than connection between the other 4 ports left ??

Thanks

Slade

if you have the cable/dsl modem hooked up to say a main computer via usb, then just have all the computers connect to the hub with a crossover cable, and set up internet sharing....

or just buy a 40$ router ;-)

ok, here is the problem

going straight to the modem with the hub means each computer will be looking for an ip address from your cable company. most do not just give out ip addresses to all the computers in yoru hosue, they usually only give out 1 which is why people by routers to stick behind the modem so more than 1 computer can use the connection.

however some companies have been foudn to give out multiple ips without charging extra. if this is the case then a hub would work fine.

of course the router gives you extra security (assuming a built in firewall) that is a great benefit and should be considered anyways asa means to protect yoruself.

and fyi, i think a straight cable would work form you hub uplink port to modem assuming the above allows it to be feasable.
