use for old adsl modem/wifi router?

So i upgraded my net connection last week from ADSL 2Mbit D😀: to new fiber-optic 40Mbit...for it to work, i needed to ditch my 2 years old ADSL modem/wifi router - DLink 2741B for a new "just" wifi-router...the technician from new ISP was unable to make the old router to work, LOL...despite the fact, old router had one of its LAN ports WAN capable...

Anyway, i am thinking now, can i use the old router as a wifi signal "receiver"? I mean, i have my main rig alongside the new router in my room, the computer is connected to the router by the cable...
...but then i have second computer upstairs, basically in a room right above. I connect to internet on this machine via wifi, i have a lousy Patriot USB "receiver" device for that...and it really sucks, if i try Speedtest, it says my download speed is 0,5Mbit...while obviously the main computer will show the "advertised" 40/20 numbers, as it should. So the question again is, can i somehow use that old router instead of that USB dongle to get the wifi signal from the new router? Can this be set up somehow?

I could buy PCI wireless network card, but i would like to try this, if its possible, first. Thanks.

Not unless it has a "Client Wireless" or "Wireless Bridge" mode. Very unlikely for a combo DSL modem/router. Plus, I don't think that DD-WRT supports any combo modem/router devices like that. (Well, there might be one or two, just recently supported, but I doubt yours is.)

Just spend the $20 and pick up a refurb Wireless N 300 router that is DD-WRT capable and flash it.

WRT160Nv3, or WNR2000v2 are decent choices. (Same Broadcom hardware in each.)

I've got some DD-WRT N routers for sale too, with brand-new power adapters.
