Use ethernet cable to copy from one PC to another?

Got a new laptop (Lenovo T400 with Windows 7) from work and need to transfer A LOT of data from the old to the new. But don't want to do at work. Can I just take a CAT5 cable to the ethernet port on the old thinkpad to the new? I have a gut feeling this isn't as easy as its sounds.

I could do it over my wireless network at home, but this won't be as fast.

You can, but you may need a crossover cable, you would need to configure static IP's for the 2 machines so they could talk to each other. You mention having wireless... go plug both of them in to the wired portion of the network and do it that way.

If the ports in question are gigabit, they should auto sense. So that a regular ethernet cable could be used, instead of needing a crossover cable.
Or: for under $20, a USB 2.0 transfer cable would be another option, if you have trouble getting ethernet transfer to work.
