Use DDR333 on A64 3000+ ?

My friend wants to buy a Socket939 A64 3000+. He now has a PC2700 512mb ram. He doesn't want to spend a lot so he just want to get another 512mb ram and put them together.

Questions:

1. one ddr333 + one ddr400 together, will it work on dual ? (both set to 333?)

2. given a ddr333 and a ddr400, what should he do? set both to 333? then on dual? or let it be ddr333 and ddr 400 and single channel? which combination is best for him?

3. how much faster will it be if he use two ddr400?

Thanks.

I am using DDR333 with a 3200(not dual channel) and I seem to be on par with almost every benchmark I have ever seen for a similar system....so...not much 😉

if I ain't mistaken(might be) you will have to run both at 333. So might as well run dual if they will run dual. Unless the 333 stick can do 400 then the 400 is forced to 333.

What kind of PC2700 does he have? It might o/c to 400 speeds.

Shouldn't hold an A64 back too much.

Most of the more recent DDR333 will do DDR400, but if the stuff is two years old or more he might not be able to hit that level. Tell him to try loosening the timings and see if he can get his old stick up to 400.

Anyway, I can't see buying a new DDR333 stick, even to run in dual channel. He'll regret it later. Get a stick of DDR400 and get it over with. Worst comes to worst, pick up a ValueRAM (or similar) dual-channel pack for $120 or so.
