Use a regular computer for checkout at a store?

I'm sure some of you ATOT guys have worked as cashiers, and was wondering if the store used a regular desktop computer connected to a small printer and a barcode scanner. The software QuickBook from Intuit is currently being used but is too cumbersome and requires much too much mousing (not good for busy hours). A keyboard/keystroke oriented solution is wanted but I'm not sure what is good.

So, what point of sale software for a computer based cash register did you use?

Also, what nature of business and do you need to have it link to an accounting program of any sort? Does it need to do time & attendence as well?

It's for a small liquor store and the current inventory size is perhaps 1000 different items. So yes, importability from Intuit's quickbook is wanted as nobody wants to do that much data entry. Time and attendance? Hrmm, there are about 3 or 4 different cashiers but I believe they are on fixed schedules with the pay set per week (or estimate pay, nothing too on point as it's a mom and pop shop). Logging the different cashiers would be nice, but not as important as the ease of use part (no mouse, they really hate it since it slows them down). No link to an accounting program is required.

The computer itself is a Dell (didn't look at the model no.) with a 2.4Ghz processor and 80 gigs of HD and I think 512 RAM. Pretty much overkill. Operating system is Windows XP Professional.

Uhm, well yes that's the version they are currently using and are trying to get rid of.

The budget for the software purchase hasn't been mentioned to me but cheaper is better. I would imagine that they would like to spend no more than several hundred dollars (~$500) for such software.

Quickbooks has some third party options that allow you to use a touch screen. That would speed things up quite a bit. It's hard to move away from quickbooks but still keep the interface with it.

Hrmm, they have a 15 inch DELL LCD and do not want to purchase any new hardware. They are a firm believer that everything can be done with the formidable keyboard, handheld barcode scanner, and Epson roll printer (Not sure what printing technology it uses).
