Use a DISH NETWORK dish to receive DirecTV?

Hey all,

We just rented a new house today, and it already has a Dish Network dish mounted. Well, we already own all our DirecTV equipment, and are subscirbers, so I was wondering if we could just hook up our receivers to that dish. I KNOW for sure that they aren't on the same satellite, so the dish will have to be re-aimed. But, it sure would be nice to just be able to leave that dish up there instead of taking it down and putting up a new one. So...anyone know? WOuld we maybe have to change out the LNB? Or would even that work? I don't know... Maybe the curvature of the dish is even slightly different. Any DTV techs out there who know for sure?

Yes, it should work. Make sure it's the same size and the LNB should work as well. The only caveat is if you need to get your local channels off the 119 degree satellite than you'd need another dish (a total of two or buy the new "plus" elliptical dish.)

Cool. Yeah, I was looking on ebay at dishes, and I saw that the DirecTV dishes say "can also be used with Dish Network" so I assume they are inter-operable. Fortunately (or maybe unfortunately) my city is not on local on DTV yet, so the two dishes thing isn't an issue. We're leaving this house to a couple of my friends, and I don't just want to take my dish with me, since they may be interested in getting some receivers.... So, if I can just use the Dish Network one on the new place, that works out great! :)

Thanks/

I'm on Dish Network now but I'm ditching them this x-mas for a Direct Tivo system. The prices are crazy, I'm getting two Direct Tivo boxes, the [better] elliptical dish and installation for $150. The dual tuner capability will be awsome, you can watch one show while recording another or record two at once (per box) how cool!

Wow. Damn good deal there. How did you swing that? Hell, I would be glad just to pick up the two DirecTivo boxes for that much!

Well I can't seem to get to the site right now but it's only for new Dtv customers and requires a 12 month contract. Since you're already a Dtv customer the deals aren't as insane but are still pretty reasonable considering a what a standalong Tivo goes for (and doesn't have dual tuner functionality.)

That's very cool. Yeah, I know it sucks to miss out on all the cool deals because I'm not a first-timer anymore... But I had my day. Back when I first got DirecTV, I got the receiver, the dish, the installation, 3 monthe free, and 3 free months of ALLLL the channels, for only $65.00 Back then, when people were paying $500.00 just for the damn dish (ROFL), I was getting a pretty amazing deal. Oh, how times change....

Thanks for the URL, though. I'll definitely refer people to it if they ask.

Ya, they must really want to get customers at these prices. As I recall it's only $70 for a Direct Tivo box for current customers and all you need is a dual LNB (plus an additional run of coax) to be Tivo'd :)
