From 2008 to 2011, Miami police officers shot at people in 33 separate instances. According to the US Department of Justice comprehensive investigation, 3 of those shootings were unjustified. Many more were considered "questionable at best." The review was initiated in November of 2011 after seven young African American men were killed by police officers in eight months.

Now the Miami PD must develop a plan under federal oversight to address this problem. Good news everyone! They certainly need someone to reign in the brutal racist cops giving everyone else a bad name.

Interesting. I didn't know DoJ conducted these kinds of investigations. I wonder if this is routine or if there was a special reason they investigated Miami PD.

I'm also curious if 33 "shot at" occurrences in 3 years is typical of a police force that size or not. I have to assume it's higher than average if this is considered a poor assessment.

This really doesn't surprise me any more, given the daily news reports and occurrences regarding excessive / brute force by many police departments in the US. It seems the militarizing of police departments across the country, the "unaccountability" that has occurred in so many instances of unprovoked shootings, and beatings, police in general have seem to become "invincible" to any real repercussions. I don't think this is just isolated to the Miami PD. I wonder if they will get around to investigating all police departments, and start taking in statistics of the abuses?
