Purchased a new PC case to do a rebuild. Have an older Intel D945GPM mobo that I'm upgrading with :). The new case has this USB3 cable but the mobo does not have any USB3 connection for it but has a couple of USB2 connections. This is all new to me.

Could somebody tell me what my options would be concerning this matter?? Why we are on the subject maybe offer a little explanation on the differences between the two as USB2 really has been doing all I need. Would appreciate and look forward to hearing from our forum their thoughts concerning this. Thank you for taking the time to assist me in this project. SM USAF 62-66

Got this for that exact problem with an AM3 motherboard with only USB 2.0 headers. If your new case doesn't have optical drive bays either I don't know what to tell you. ;)

Very well than .... The case did come with a usb2 cable that I was able to connect to mobo. The case has the USB3 cable but the mobo does not have any connection for this. The mobo has about 3 usb2 connections. Just a thought .... maybe there are adapters that I can connect to the usb3 to convert to usb2, if that is possible? Hope that helps! Yes it came with provisions for optical drive and floppy. Thanks for the link... SM USAF 62-66

You have two options.

First, and the most simple is using an adaptor like this to connect the 19pin internal USB cable to a standard 9pin USB2 header.

The more advanced option is adding a USB3 PCIe expansion card with a 19pin internal USB3 header. This obviously requires a free PCIe (usually x1) slot. This gives the full benefit of USB3 as well.

I'm beginning to get the picture. Initially I thought I was going to use the case, as it seem reasonable, very compact with a small footprint. However after I installed the motherboard - optical drive - PSU there was no sufficient space for the HDD without having to manufacture a slot and/or platform for support . Very disappointing. So I just ordered another Case and paid more attention to what it comes with.

With a case without a USB3 cable, would it be possible to install a PCIe card or something like that, to the motherboard to provide USB3 access if/when needed? Thank you for the insight. I think it will come in handy. SM USAF 62-66

You just need a USB3 card like the one I linked to, it has both an internal header and back panel USB ports.

If you need USB3 on the front of the case you'll need an inexpensive 5.25", or 3.5" if the case still has those, USB3 front panel too.
