Usb3 extension cord

Can a usb2 extension cord be connected to a usb3 port at one end and usb3 external drive cable at the other end and maintain usb3 speeds.

USB2.0 and USB3.0 cables are constructed differently, so what you want to do won't work while maintaining USB3.0 speeds. Also, the longer the cables, the more likely the connection is to be slower anyway (even when not mixing cables like you are suggesting).

For extended length cables, ketchup79 has the right suggestion - always go with active rather than passive extensive cables. Monoprice also sells one:

Most of my spare cables from the last Monoprice order are gone.
Had a ssd no read disk error caused by a loose poor fitting sata cable so I switched out a few sata wires with the last of good round Mono cables.
