Not sure if this is more motherboard or networking related, so my apologies if it is posted in the incorrect forum.
On my wireless lan I have 2 computers. An old BX with a P2 350 and a Athlon classic 700. The BX works perfectly with my cheapo Netlux USB wireless adapter. The Athlon of course is the one causing me to pull my few remaining hairs out! It was set up with an abit KA7 and win xp. At first I had a cheapo netlux USB wireless adapter. When it was plugged into the back usb, it would function, but cause lockups, about 2 to 6 per day, which were not present before. I knew most usb wireless adapters may have issues with XP, so I ordered an Orinoco Gold usb device. It fixed nothing!
I tried plugging it into both an Opti PCI USB add in adapter and the front usb ports which naturally were hooked onto the second usb header on the motherboard. In both those instances the adapter would only get intermittant connections. Signal strenght would go between excellent to no signal for about the first 5 min of a boot. Eventually the led that indicated the usb adapter was powered would just go out. I knew Via had been known for some USB problems, so I thought the cheapest solution would be a motherboard replacement. I ordered a MSI MS-6191, with AMD north AND southbridges for about 35 bucks shipped. Got it up and going only to find its worse! On the main USB headers on back it gets very brief bursts of connectevity for about a minute then nothing. The Opti add in usb card produces the same results. Unfortunately the manual shows a nice pretty picture of the on board second usb header but shows no pin outs, so I cannot hook that up yet (got a mssg posted on the msi board, should get that resolved soon) however I doubt that would solve anything at this point.
Both the Netlux and Orinoco wireless adapters work fine on the ancient BX, and my more modern 8k7a 760 motherboards. Why oh why can I not get either one to work on EITHER (completely Via or completely AMD chipset) slot A motherboard even with PCI add in usb cards?
Sorry for the lenght of the post, the lenght is due to the numerous fixes I have already tried and a bit of an exhaust induced rant.
