USB Wireless Lan Adaptors... CPU Ultilization

I'm thinking about jumping into wireless networking to share my Cable Modem. I am thinking about getting the Netgear ME102 Access Point and MA101 USB Adaptors. I was wondering how much CPU time the USB connection takes. Is it considerablly higher than getting the PCI adaptor for the PCMCIA card?

I have a friend who uses those wireless USB devices, and they are pretty decent. I don't know the CPU utilization, but if you have a fast computer to begin with (he has a gigahertz), then you should be set to go.

I am using the D-Link USB Wireless on my Laptop.

I am not experiencing any unusual problems so I did not bother to measure CPU utilization (I don?t rip music CD and surf the net at same time).

I got USB because my old laptop could not recognize Wireless PCMCIA cards.

In addition, USB gives me more flexibility to manipulate the antenna and get better results. (I.e. I don?t have to adjust my sitting position to manipulate the fixed antenna in the regular PCMCIA)

With USB wireless devices, you can make double-duty use of it in the laptop and on the desktop as well. It offers a bit more flexibility in that area. But I went with PCMCIA over USB because I do not wish to carry an extra device alongside the laptop, plus the desktop is very cluttered as it is.

With today's computers, considering that entry level systems and most people's system are anything less than 400mhz systems, cpu utilization should be a less of a worry than previous, at least that's what I think 🙂

Plucky

Ok, so those that do have the USB wireless connection do not notice any noticable slowdown. Then I think I'll have to try it out. Thanks for the help.
