USB Webcam & Mouse freeze in WinXP -- help!

Hello,

I recently purchased a Logitech Quickcam 3000 Pro and hooked it up to my WinXP machine (via USB), installed the software, everything seemed to be working okay (Netmeeting detected it and everything). I can even take pictures with it using Logitech's included software, so all is good from that respect.

However, when I try to record live video using Logitech's software, or when I start fooling around with Netmeeting's features, my Microsoft Intellimouse Optical Explorer (hooked up via USB port as well) locks up (freezes) and I am unable to use it anymore. The camera starts acting very weird too and my machine consequently gets all weirded up, and I end up having to reboot the machine.

I have read numerous posts about this on USENET and other sites (USBMAN.com), and as far as I know, no one seems to have found the exact problem or solution. Apparently it's not just the Logitech that is doing this, other webcams have this problem as well, so I am thinking maybe it's a Windows issue? or a USB issue?

I am running my PC on an Athlon 1Ghz with an Abit KT7 motherboard. I have upgraded my BIOS to the latest version, patched Logitech's software, deleted my USB ports and had XP re-detect them, and all that jazz. And still nothing.

Is anyone else experiencing this? And, does anyone have any help to provide? It would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Are they connected to the same USB port (using a hub)? If so try putting them on different USB ports. It's kinda funny, Logitech really needs to learn how to make USB devices. The only USB device I've had problems with is my Logitech Cordless Mouseman Optical.

The webcam probably draws the full 500ma allowed by your USB port. As mentioned try using separate ports, or even better separate USB controllers. A good one to use is one with a 4 host controller chipset like lucent, that goes into a PCI slot. From my memory of that board, USB was pretty problematic with it as it is.

Thanks for the tips guys. Yeah, I wanted to try and install the Webcam on a different USB port than my mouse (they are currently on the same port), but I am running into a problem.

When I'm looking at my Device Manager, it says that I have 2 USB Root Hubs and 2 Controllers, so that means I should technically have 4 USB 'slots', right? Well, I only have 2 visible (one being used by the mouse, one by the Webcam).

On the KT7 board, where is the other USB Port (I am guessing a 2nd set of 2 'slots'?) located?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks again.

Okay, I also just tried connecting my USB mouse to the PS/2 port via the adapater Microsoft provides with the mouse, and I am still getting quirky results.

So, can anyone perhaps help me with the USB 2nd port thing? I still can't figure out where the 2nd set of ports are... Thanks.
