Hi, I have a Dell 600SC Machine with two USB Ports.

One of the ports I had 5 port USB Hub, on the other it had a external hard drive.

Well, while the computer was running, all the 5 ports that were hooked up to the hub, I unplugged one and plugged in another external hard drive, but it didnt recognize.

Then I noticed the green light on the hub was gone, and actually when i replugged it, it only lasted a few seconds.

Now, nothing works on the USB ports.

Actually, in the Device Manager, under USB Controllers it says:

- Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller
- Unknown Device
- Unknown Device
- USB Root Hub

I tried each device seperately on the ports without the hub, but still no go, nothing gets recognized, it says something failed and Windows can't recognize device connected to the USB.

I deleted the whole USB Controller section under Device Manager, so when it would restart it would reinstall the drivers, still no go, anything I connect gets that failure message plus gets tagged unknown device.

I tried the troublshooter - no progress.

Are my integral USB ports dead?

Is there a workaround? Like, if I get a USB 5 Port Card, will it work, and won't interfere with the two integral ones (by me disabling those).

I have WinXP Pro.

Thank you.

Ok, my next step was going to safe mode and deleting all USB related devices, I did , rebooted, and in standard mode windows installs the USB Host Controller by connecting the internet, but then it installs USB Root Hub, then it plugs in either one Unknown Device and sometime two, though I have no USB Devices connected.

I went to Device Manager --> View Connection

It has the following:

+ Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller
- USB Root Hub
- Unknown Device
- Unknown Device

It seems like the problem is Error 1055: The service database is locked, but I could find anything online

I did uninstall USB Host Controllers, but same thing got repeated when I rebooted, it installed and same problem.

This all started today when in one the USB Ports where I have 4 port USB Hub, I pulled the printer cable out, and plugged in a USB External Hard Drive, which did not get recognized, so then I tried every port, nothing worked, I thought the hub was dead. So I pulled the Hub out and tried on a laptop, it worked, so I plugged the external hard straight in to the PC Port, no go, then I plugged the Printer, it won't printer, found out it says not connected.

So at the time I plugged in the External Hard Drive in to the Hub --> which was plugged in to the USB 1.0 computer port I have, the problem started. Now, I started to think maybe there was too much power or too less and it destroyed the computer port, but don't know.

Also FYI - when I uninstall the OpenHCD Controller, the following happens.

I reboot the windows driver installed is usbhub20.sys or something like that, then the USB root hub gets installed, then two unknown devices.

Then on the bottom it says USB Device Not Recognized - One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windoes dos not recignize it. For assistance in solving this problem, click this message.

When I click it just shows two unknown devices.

Whiile at this time there are NO Usb devices connected to the computer.

Have you tried System Restore on this? That would be my first step, in case there's some registry settings that were hosed. I hope you're not one from the "I turned off System Restore" club.

I have not tried System Restore yet, not sure if I still have it, I did have Norton Ghost, but it's backed up to my external usb hard drive, which is not recognized anymore.

FYI I am posting link below to another forum where I tried some other steps but have not had any success:
