USB trouble

For some reason, I have the hardest time using USB devices when connecting them via a USB hub. They work fine when connected directly to my PC's USB ports, but communication fails fairly consistently when I use a hub, particularly for USB thumb drives.

At first, I thought it was the hub I was using, but I RMA'd it, and the new one gives me the same trouble. The hub is self-powered, so I know a lack of voltage is not the problem.

Anyone else experience similar issues and know of a fix? (Rig specs are in my sig.)

I have run an older (USB 1.1) Belkin self-powered hub for years with no trouble. However, I have read several postings suggesting that hubs and multiple devices do not mesh well in very high rate data transfer applications, like streaming video. The bus mamagement "overhead" traffic can interrupt the data stream leaving missed data, and this may be worse when a hub is trying to manage multiple ports into one mobo port.
