USB-to-USB PC file transfer...is special software necessary for this to work?

I'm just finishing building my new Athlon/ePoX box...I have some stuff on my laptop that I'd like to put on the new machine. I've found several of the USB-to-USB packages, but only one place that sells just the cable (much cheaper, of course). Problem is, I don't know if I really need the software they want to sell along with the cable....

I have a usb to usb cable, it came with s/w which builds a windows explorer looking window. Top have being your puter and lower window the remote puter. Just drag files from one window to the other. the disk has some drivers and the the explorer looking s/w.
Mine is couple years old..w98 and w2k support..can copy it for you..let me know.
