USB to PS/2 adapter

Synomenon

I'm using a Dell RT7D50 keyboard. It's a USB keyboard and for months I've been looking for an adapter that will let me plug it into my computer's PS/2 keyboard port. I've tried all sorts of those green and purple USB to PS/2 adapters and none work. I finally found this and it should work, but it costs a fortune:

Anyone know of something like this that costs less?

Oh and I know someone is gonna ask. I want to plug my keyboard into the PS/2 port because:

1) I can power on my PC via keyboard only through the PS/2 port

2) I have a limited number of USB ports and I have a number of USB devices that don't like to be connected to USB hubs.

3) I'd get a USB2.0 PCI card, but my PC only has one 16x PCI express slot and one 1x PCI express slot. I have my video card in the 16x PCI express slot and a tv tuner card (for TIVO like functionality) in my 1x PCI express slot.

For that price I might as well buy a PS2 keyboard and don't have to worry about it not working and just keep the USB keyboard for future use or sell it. For less than half of that price I can even buy wireless logitech mouse/kb combo using PS2.

I know. There's no way I'd buy it at that price. Just wondering if anyone had seen something like this for a much lower price.

It's just that I'm VERY selective / picky about the keyboard I use and this Dell USB keyboard is MY perfect keyboard aside from it being USB instead of PS/2.

I'm quite sure there is a PS2 version of that kb at Dell. KB's are like shoes. They seem to fit better as they get old. Believe me, first IBM KB I used was probably the best. But when they stopped selling them I have to adapt and overcome. So here I am with a logtech wirelss combo.

Nope, Dell does not have a PS/2 version of this keyboard. I've been scouring the net for one as well.

I tried some wireless sets and most were good. The last wireless set I owned was the Logitech MX3100. Very nice set, but didn't work well with my desk. These wireless sets generally don't seem to work well with my glass / metal desk. The keyboard tray is metal and the desk's frame is metal.

First post is really informative.lol

That is a man who knows how to use the resources available. You should tip him 10 bucks........

My question is why doesn't the cheap adapters work and the $125 thing does? There may be an easy mod for the cheap things to make them work if you knew why. What does the $125 gadget do?

I'm guessing the cheap adapters don't work because the keyboard itself has to be compatible with the PS/2 interface. Most USB keyboards are still compatible with PS/2 and that's why they work with the cheap adapters. This Dell keyboard isn't so that expensive box takes all the signals from the Dell keyboard and translates the USB signal to PS/2.

That's just a guess though.

the reason I think you should be able to mod a cheap adapter to work like the expensive one is because the expensive one doesn't seem to require a power adapter - implying that it's just a matter of rewiring the USB to a PS2 form. Though maybe it uses a tiny bit of power from the PS2 port to run a logic chip of some kind.

Maybe you should consider getting one of those 5.25" bay control panels that come with a remote control for turning the computer on (if you have a spare bay). I know xoxide.com has them.

I have a Shuttle which has:

1 x 5.25" drive bay (occupied by my DVD burner)
1 x 3.5" drive bay (occupied by my external hard drive docking bay)
1 x PCI express 16x slot (occupied by my video card)
1x PCI express 1x slot (occupied by my TV tuner card)

I guess I could try to find an electrician or something that could try and help me rewire one of those small, cheap adapters.
