is this required for ALL usb drive enclosures? On the iPad/iPhone there is a little dongle that allows you to plug in an sd card. How does that work without a bridge?

Conversely, the ipad/iphone will not recognize anything that uses the usb to ata interface - ios does not have the drivers. I connect this way:

ipad<-powered usb hub<-portable usb drive

this however does work
ipad<-powered usb hub<-usb stick (formatted fat32 with a folder at the root named DCIM with photos in it)

Still I'd prefer to use a hard drive so that's a nogo. Unless I get an enclosure that also has a chip that runs a wifi server, an ftp stack , a webdav server or some other protocol the ipad supports.

or i jailbreak my ipad and use ifile.

but i am still curious as to why usb sticks can be read- they obviously do not have an ata/atapi bridge. what do they have?
