USB Switch Randomly Turns Off

Hi All,

Four years ago, I started working from home one or two days a week. I have a desktop computer for gaming and my work laptop. I plug both computers directly into my monitor and switch between the two computers' video output using my monitor. For the keyboard and mouse, I have a Starview SV231USB KVM switch. I don't use the video because it's VGA, but I use the USB for the keyboard and mouse.

Everything worked fine until a week ago. I would be gaming and the keyboard/mouse would stop working for a few seconds. I figured the KVM was starting to go, so I ordered a USB switch and hub. I got the same problem with the USB switch and hub! My gaming desktop is running Windows 8.1.

I searched the Intertubes and did the following:

1. In Device Manager, for all the "Generic USB hubs", I went to the "Power Management" tab and unchecked "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power".

2. In Power Options, under "USB settings", I disabled "USB selective suspend setting".

3. All the motherboard drivers and BIOS were already up-to-date.

I still got the keyboard and mouse randomly cutting out.

Anyone have any other suggestions?

Thanks

Hi All. I tried different USB ports and still get the same issue.

If I don't use the USB switch, the keyboard and mouse work just fine. They do not cut out at all. I get the same issue with both the "Starview SV231USB KVM switch" and a brand new "Plugable USB 2.0 Switch".

Thanks to everyone who replied and read this thread. I believe the issue is resolved now.

After trying multiple keyboards/mice, multiple USB switches, plugging the keyboard/mouse directly into the computer, buying a separate USB card, and re-installing Windows 8.1, I still ran into this issue.

Over a week ago, I installed a new motherboard. So far, I have not experienced the issue! Looks like the issue is resolved.

Thanks!

Just an update. The issue not resolved. I had the new motherboard for about a week. I only got to do some light gaming, so I didn't get a lot of testing time in. Unfortunately, the keyboard and mouse still randomly stop working. I even tried a new power supply, downgrading from Windows 8.1 to 7, and disabling the onboard sound card. The only way to debug the issue is to keep replacing components, one-by-one. But that will get very expensive.

When I bought the desktop, I was on the fence about desktop vs gaming laptop. I am going to order a gaming laptop and get rid of the desktop. $1200 down the drain!
