USB SuperDisk Drive problems

I have a 120MB Imation USB SuperDisk drive, and recently its been giving me problems. When I try to format a 1.44MB diskette, it gets to about 7/8 done, and then it chokes on the disk. It just keeps trying to write but eventually fails. Also, if I fill up a disk near that point, I also get the same read errors. I have tried numerous disks, including new ones, so it must be the drive. Its strange because if the drive head was failing, wouldn't it be unable to write/read on the whole diskette and not just near the end?
Anyone have suggestions? Thanks

Also, another question, if I were to pull disassemble the USB enclosure and remove the 120MB SuperDisk drive inside, could I just plug in a hard drive? The specs say ATAPI device, and in Windows XP, it shows up as a USB-ATAPI bridge. The case is the original Imation enclosure for the 120MB SuperDisk drive.

Thanks!

Even if the drive had a standard 40-pin header and 4-pin power (which it probably doesn't), ATAPI only supports CD-ROM, tape, and other non-hard-drive drives.
