Hello. I am having a problem with the USB devices and PS/2 keyboard on my system not powering down after I shut down. This occurs with devices that draw power from the system and devices that are self powered. It happens on every shutdown. I'm fairly certain this is a Windows issue or setting causing this to happen. My previous system had the same problem after moving from XP SP2 to SP3. It went away after reverting to SP2. However this new system is running Vista 64 SP1. I have looked in the BIOS power management section and did not see anything that could be causing this. Again, I am sure this is a Windows setting, but I'm not familiar enough with Vista yet to know what is causing it. Thanks.

It has nothing to do with windows since windows has no control over the system once its shut down and during the initial POST. It has everything to do with your motherboard. Its all in where the USB ports are getting the power from. Many motherboards are default to have the USB supplied by the 5VSB rail from the PSU. This is a 5 V line that is constantly active even when the system is off. The motherboard needs this power input so it can detect when you hit the power button on your case. Anyway some motherboards allow you to select either the 5VSB or the regular 5V rail for USB power. Check your motherboard manuel and see if there is a jumper you can set to switch it over to the regular 5V rail.

That is because your mobo is not fully shut down even though Windows is. Your mobo is on a "warm" standby for faster booting. This can be turned off on your mobo, but sometimes it is good. The easiest solution is to plug your computer into a power strip with a switch and simply turn it off after Windows shuts down. The switch is also useful if you have to do work inside the box. Makes for a safer environment. :)

Some power supplies have an on/off switch in the rear that can also do it. The front panel switch is only a relay that works when the mobo has that standby power.
