usb soundcard suddenly not working

I have had a CL Audigy Nx2 USB Soundblaster for several years now and up until yesterday it was working fine. When I turned on the computer this morning I noticed the sound was coming from the laptop speaker. Looking down at the unit itself I noticed all the lights would flash every couple of seconds and none of the buttons would work when pressed. I unplugged (from laptop, speakers & power) the Audigy, waited a bit and reconnected - no change. Device manager will not re-detect.

Computer: IBM Thinkpad T40
OS: Win XP Pro SP2
Sound: Creative Labs Audigy NX 2 Sound Blaster (USB)

Any ideas?

If the integrated sound is dead then you'll have to use something like this and a set of speakers.
