USB Soundcard and Speaker combo....such a thing made?

I have three desktop computer systems that need both a sound card and basic speakers.

I'm sending these to a remote site that doesn't have any tech support, so I was thinking a USB soundcard would be easiest to setup since they wouldn't have to open the computer.

then I thought, maybe they make a soundcard and speaker combo unit...... looked, but couldn't find anything.

It would be very cool if I could install the software, have them plug in the USB cable, and that would be it......

So, this is what I"m looking for:

1: USB Soundcard/speaker combo
or
2: USB Soundcard

Comments? Ideas? Thoughts?

I don't know if there are any still on the market, but Windows 98 (or was it 95?) and later supported USB speakers - No sound card required.

Viper GTS

Microsoft used to have a set of speakers out that were really good called the DS-80. They could function purely off USB using a soundcard built into the subwoofer; Hard to find any now.

Kewl, I'll check it out.

Sorry I didn't give enough info.

These are Windows 2000 Pro machines, fresh builds, Gateway P2-400 or P3-500....... they just need basic sound for data entry... when they press enter, make an error, or tab a differnt wav file is played....this allows them to type a lot faster because they don't have to look as much.

I just hate to have to send a tech out to put in sound cards.... I'll get one of these USB speakers and give them a try.

Thanks!

I think they might have had Ensonic ISA sound cards, but the ISA version doesn't have drivers for Windows 2000 Pro so were removed long ago.

Boston has the BA-735 in digital USB form. Supposedly, you can still use a sound card to process the sound, then the sound gets fed on a digital stream over the USB to the speaker. I'm not sure if there's any truth to that or not though since I also heard that you don't need a sound card with digital USB speakers.

Philips Aurilium 24bit USB Sound card, review here .

The Aurilium could easily be mistaken for hi-fi equipment that costs many times more than its $99.99 price tag and matches your silver aluminum case perfectly
.

Since this is just for data entry you could pick up an AOpen soundcard and a set of drive bay speakers. This would make a nice integrated solution that wouldn't require any hookup. I have these speakers hooked up to the integrated audio in my server and they sound... very utilitarian! 🙂 Total outlay for each computer = $28 including shipping.

The question is confusing because there is no such thing as a USB soundcard. A "card" by definition, plugs into a slot, usually on the motherbaord. There are external sound systems that use data from the USB port, but they are not "cards."

True, but as I stated in my original post "I'm sending these to a remote site that doesn't have any tech support"

anyways, I found a solution.

Thanks Guys!
