I've got a user who has a very expensive communication device that attaches to the PC via serial cable. It's function is it reads data from remote traffic counters.

Anyway the problem is his new laptop has no serial ports. So we bought him a CablesToGo USB to Serial DB9 adapter, and have tried every conceivable combination of port/baud/other settings, but the software can't see the device. The driver is installed correctly and everything else is a go, it's just the device is not seeing the port.

CablesToGo seems to be somewhat of a standard, but it's clearly not working in our case. Does anyone have any experience with other brands or adapters of this type?

I've never used them, but from what I've gathered is they can be hit or miss regardless of brand. For some applications, I don't think any will work.

WOOOOOT

I tried one last thing...I disabled FIFO buffers in the advanced properties in Device Mangler, then set baud @ 38400 and it worked!!!! Amazing. I've never seen the FIFO buffers do anything...

I think it may have to do with how "low level" the software tries to interact with the port.
