usb scanner isn't detected

i have installed a usb port on my Mitac , win 98, tekram motherboard. the port is detected and my printer is detected but it won't let me load the drivers, says to check plugs and inf. file... and my scanner, mustek 1200 ubplus, lets me load the drivers but won't detect the scanner. says the scanner is not plugged in and the add new hardware wizard only shows the digital camera in the options.
anyone know what i need to do?

i have uninstalled and reinstalled updated drivers.

Reinstall the USB drivers supplied by win98.

USB can be quirky. But generally, the best way is to install the scanner software and drivers FIRST, then reboot, and then HOT PLUG the scanner.

my next question is if the usb port is detected, then what would keep it from loading my printer drivers that I have been using with a parallel cord? and why does it load scanner drivers but doesn't detect scanner?
it seems like the two would be related somehow

did you install imaging as part of the accessories?

unplug the printer and see what happens.

Hot Plug the scanner into a USB port that you know to be alive and working.
