USB problem Toshiba laptop ?

I am having a problem with the USB ports on my Toshiba A45-S121 laptop
w/XP Home . When I plug in a USB mouse ( or other device like a card reader ) , the device is the right name recognized but the generic XP drivers are not loaded and the drivers are not found ( fortunately the touchpad still works ) . The same thing happens with my printer even though the the drivers are loaded . This happend before a couple of years ago when it was under warranty and Toshiba support worked it out over over the phone (no OS re-load ) but I cannot recall the solution . I really would appreciate some help with this . -
Thanks

Try downloading s driver for the programs over the internet.

Oh and about what support did to help you, did they make you do anyhing in the BIOS by any chance?

erikk92 - I have tried dowloaning divers but that did not do it . I think that it is and XP ( maybe registry problem ?) .

I am thinking about going to Device Manager and uninstalling everything I see under Universal Seirial Bus Controllers . Will the XP on the machinge set everything back up or will I loose something . All I have is that image disc came with the machine .

A was advised by friend to take a look at the "hidden" view in Device Manager . There is an exclamation mark by Serial iunder the non-plug and play heading . Could this be the problem ? How to fix ?

I would do a couple of things. Have you checked your "Event Viewer" for problems? Go to Control Panel, click on Administrative Tools, and then click on Event Viewer.

Look in the System section for red icons on the left (and yellow). Red signifies problems, yellow mostly warnings. The event viewer logs are sorted by time, but you can resort by "type" by clicking on the "Type" tab at the top. They'll still be time-sorted by type at that point. See if you see any Red icons. Now, if you do, that doesn't mean you have serious problems. It's just a good place to start looking. Click on these red items to see if any have to do with USB and post the messages/errors here.

Also, you can try doing something simple by just Uninstalling your USB host controllers in Device Manager and reboot, letting Windows redetect the controllers. I would unplug my USB devices first, then go through the uninstall process and reboot. After rebooting and seeing that the controllers have been reinstalled, (and reboot again if prompted), try your usb devices.
