USB problem. Some devices are drawing too much power???

When I use my USB printer, my USB mouse goes wacko. Sometimes it'll freeze for a bit as the printer is being accessed and printing. Sometimes when Im printing, the USB mouse would die. It's an optical mouse and there would be no light so I guess it's not getting any power.

I have a P4 on MSI Sis645Ultra. Printer is Epson PhotoSTylus 820 and mouse is regular MS optical mouse. I'm pretty sure it's not the printer because the same thing happens when I use another USB device. The mouse and printers are on different USB hubs. One is connected to the onboard USB and another is connected through the USB extension on the motherboard.

Have you tried it on an external USB hub that is powered (has its own power supply) that should tell you if it`s a power problem.

Powered USB hubs are better then non-powered USB hubs.

Each port is able to supply up to 500mA. However I doubt your Epson is actually drawing power from the USB port (that's why it has a power plug), so there shouldn't be any problem with the amount of power. The only thing going over the USB port is the data transfer, the power is being unused as far as the printer is concerned. The mouse dying may be due to the power failing, or the port failing entirely. Does your keyboard still work when the mouse dies?

It sounds like maybe the hub or the port on the motherboard is failing. It might also be the ports on the motherboard itself. Try connecting them directly to the motherboard ports.
