A friend of mine is having a strang problem with her USB ports, and I wanted some ideas before I went over there tonight to try to fix it. She claims she unplugged a USB device from her motherboard, the system blue screened (Windows 98) and crashed.. She rebooted and none of her USB devices were working. I had her remove the USB listings out of the hardware tab in the system icon in the control panel... she rebooted and Win 98 recognized the USB devices, reinstalled them, but she still could not use any of her USB devices. Any ideas here on what the problem is? I believe she has an Abit KT7 motherboard.. possibly a KT7A.. I forget.. she is using the 2 built-in USB ports.. She tried a known working device and that didn't work on this machine either.. It seems like the hardware is working because Win 98 recognizes is.. but no devices are working..

get a USB hub that can use a power adaptor... if you don't have a USB hub then go buy a 4 porter. You can get one at Sams club (if you have one) for 20 bucks or at newegg even for 20. i think there is a 10 dollar rebate for a d-link hub.

now, here's what you do if or once you get a usb hub. Plug the usb hub in the main usb port and then plug in your devices into the hub and there should be active power or have it plugged in. If it works that means not enough or no power is being supplied to the USB ports on the motherboard. If it still doesn't work then the ports on your motherboard are completely bad. Bad to a point where no data can be communicated.

My dad had the same problem and has the KT7A motherboard. I'll bet any money thats the problem.

Bad USB ports... after that it's up to you to RMA it.

Good luck!

grrr had to edit it several times... didn't make any sense ... i think it's all the studying .. ya thats the problem ;)

The exact same thing just happened to me too with my KT133A motherboard. It happened just as the warranty was expiring. I'm really hoping that Iwill will replace it.
