USB problem, is motherboard bad or is it me?

I bought a used Asus A8V Deluxe v.2 board. Set up went fine, installed WinXP (SP2) with no problems but none of the USB ports seem to work . Clutching at straws, I tried installing the USB driver that came on the motherboard CD but it said I didnt need it because SP2 is installed (knew that but it was worth a shot).

Checked Device Manager and all USB controllers are installed. I deleted all the USB entries, rebooted and let Windows rebuild the entries. Still not working.

Checked the BIOS, USB is enabled and lists USB hub as installed but Windows keeps trying to install drivers (which the hub doesn't need) and then says could not install device.
Hub shows up in Device Manager as unknown device with the yellow question mark.

Same problem with trying to install printers and scanner, all of which worked fine on the setup this was supposed to replace. :disgust:

This is the fourth computer I've built, never had this kind of problem.

Thanks in advance!

It could be that the mobo's onboard USB controller is bad.My nephew's FIC AU11 is experiencing the same thing. You can add a PCI USB card if you want to keep that board.

Thanks for the reply.

Since I bought the X800XT just a few months ago I had wanted to avoid having to buy a new video card. Probably will bite the bullet though. :frown:

I had a similar problem when I built my system last summer. When I installed a USB PCI card the USB ports worked....so I had to RMA the mobo and now it works great!

You shouldn't have to buy a new video card though!

Thanks! I figured it was the motherboard. :disgust:

It just keeps getting better though. Except for the USB issue it was working fine for a couple of days, but this morning it wouldn't power up. Checked all the connections and reset cmos, still nothing. Power LED on the board is lit so I know power is going to the board.

Limiting myself to the AGP card leaves few options for a new motherboard, that's why I had mentioned getting a new PCIe card.

Stability and reliability are top priorities so I really don't feel like messing with this board any longer. I'd rather be using rather than working on my computer. Fortunately we have this second computer to use while rebuilding the first.

Just a quick update.

After cooling off for a couple of days, I disconnected everything except the video card and master drive and cleared the CMOS. Computer booted up fine. I flashed to newest bios and began connecting devices one by one.

Running smoothly and USB ports are now fully functional. Really don't know what made the difference, just glad we're up and running. :D
