Hello This is my first post.

Recently I did a clean install of Windows Vista on my system. After installing all drivers I found out that none of the 7 USB ports were working. I downloaded the latest drivers from the ASUS website and tried them but still the problem did not go.
I booted to Windows XP (I dual boot XP and Vista) and cheked the USB ports and they were not functioning. I called up the store from which I bought the computer and a technician came and checked it. He is says the Motherboard is faulty and has to be replaced. Since it is not in the warranty period I have to buy a new one. Is my motherboard really faulty?

My computer's specifications are:

Motherboard: ASUS P5LD2-VM/S

I dont know if the following information matters:
CPU : Pentium D 820 2.8 Ghz
RAM : 2GB Kingston 667Mhz
Graphics Card: Palit 7300GT PCIe
Hard Disk : 80GB + 320GB
I have a TV card installed on the PCI Slot

If I buy a new motherboard I will upgrade my CPU as well. Please recommend me some motherboards and processors. I am looking at the Pentium Dual core series CPUs but of the motherboard I don't know which one to take. I am not looking or a top of the line motherboard only one that has basic features like onboard LAN and Audio, 4 Sata ports, an IDE port, PCIe slot, 2 PCI slots. Oh I almost forgot It should be a micro ATX. I don't overclock but may like to look into it in the future.

Do you have both front & back usb ports and non of them are working?
I find that very strange since they're probably located in two different places on the motherboard.
I have a sneaking suspicion that this is merely a driver issue.

If worse comes to worse I would recommend this motherboard but let's hold off on buying new until we're sure you need it. Can't always trust your local techs.

Let me do some looking...

Alright I would say first to be sure download and install latest drivers.
Next I would go into the bios and make sure all usb ports are enabled and then boot and try out all the ports.
Finally if this doesn't work I would try booting into safe mode and testing them.

Thanks for your reply. I have 4 Usb ports at the back and 2 on the front panel, one more is with the card reader. None of them works. I have downloaded the latest drivers and tested them but they dont work. I have gone to the Bios menu and seen that the USB ports are set to 'Hi Speed'. Also please note I have P5LD2-VM/S and not P5LD2-VM SE (the S denotes that this motherboard is specially for vendors like Dell and HCL). Please can you tell me how to boot to safe mode. I know a menu comes up when your computer crashes and you restart. But how to go to safe mode just on a normal boot?

Tap f5 or f8 to get to the screen before the OS loads.
This has GOT to be a software issue.
Most likely with Vista.
I would look in the device manager as well and see if everything is showing up ok.

Yeah. Check the device driver in the control panel under "system". I have a gazillion usb ports showing up there. If there's a problem, you'll see a mark next to the device meaning the driver isn't loaded.

Thank you everyone for your replies. I tried all your suggestions except updating drivers. I have tried updating drivers before but that doesn't help. Can anybody give me an alternate link to the USB drivers for ASUS P5LD2-VM. I am not able to open their website. Or could anyone download them and upload them to rapidshare for me. Thanks in advance.
I have also tried uninstalling the USB ports and reinstalling them from device manager. It doesn't work. Also there is some unknown Hardware appearing in the deice manager list. When I try installing the necessary drivers by right clicking on it, it says that the best match for the Hardware is already installed. Here is a screenshot

There are no third-party USB drivers required for XP or Vista. USB drivers are supplied by Microsoft starting with XP SP2. Anything you might download from the motherboard manufacturer is going to be for OS prior to XP SP2. I assume you have SP2 installed for XP at a minimum. If not, you should. Do you know the USB ports were working prior to installing Windows Vista?

For the time being, shut the computer down then unplug the USB card reader. The card reader is a good candidate for causing some deadlock condition on the USB controller or hub, due to either being defective, or some BIOS/driver problem. That is most likely your unknown device.

Boot the system, then download the Intel Chipset INF Software Utility in ZIP format below:

http://downloadmirror.intel.co.../a08/infinst_autol.zip

Assuming your boot/system drive is letter C:, unzip the contents to C:\TEMP\INFINST

If the Zip utility you are using extracts the contents to another sub-folder such as INFINST_AUTOL, you'll need to make note of the complete path to setup.exe.

Click Start > Run, then enter the following command line:

C:\TEMP\INFINST\setup.exe -overall

If setup.exe is located in another sub-folder, just add that folder name into the command line path. For example, if the sub-folder is INFINST_AUTOL:

C:\TEMP\INFINST\INFINST_AUTOL\setup.exe -overall

Click OK or Proceed to install the Intel Chipset INF Software. When finished, restart the system, Windows might redetect and install some devices. If so, let it automatically find the best driver. Restart if prompted. Check if anything has changed and let us know.

The -overall switch forces the Intel utility to update/overwrite the driver INF for all applicable Intel devices. You may not even get as far as the Intel Chipset Software. If my sneaky suspicion about the card reader is correct, USB functionality could magically come back to life after unplugging it and rebooting (BTDT).

I somehow missed the fact that you're dual booting.
In which case I would have to concur with tcsenter that there is a device error or possibly something is not plugged in properly. The fact that this happens in xp as well as vista pretty much rules out the notion that this is merely a software issue. So yes unplug the card reader and check all your connections.
Also it might be wise to reset your bios completely to defaults just in case there was an issue there. Bios errors do happen. You might actually try this first.

I have tried reinstalling Drivers., resetting the BIOS to default , unplugging the card reader but its still not working. I think the motherboard is faulty so time for a new one. I live in India so I can't order through newegg, etc. I was looking at Gigabyte GA31M-S2L which is available here paired with Pentium Dual Core E2180 (I think it runs at 2Ghz). You could recommend some more motherboards made by ASUS, Gigabyte only (Abit, Asrock , not available easily or are 2-3 times their cost at Newegg). If the one I have chosen is good then are there any issues with this motherboard? Are there any revisions, etc?
