USB ports died suddenly

P4C-800E Deluxe ASUS mobo, been in service for a long while now with not a peep out of it ..

Until today. I go to hook up and external USB drive, something I've done a thousand times, and XP did not recognize it right away. Next thing I realize, my mouse was no longer working (its USB optical mouse). No keyboard either (PS2 keyboard with a USB adaptor). So I reboot and I get the No Keyboard message.

I go through an extensive process and finally get the computer back running after moving the keyboard back to PS2 and use a PS2 mouse I had spare.

I've reinstalled drivers for the USB ports, I've deleted them from Device Manager and rebooted. Device Manager seems to think everything is okey-dokey and reports them being installed and working properly. But if I connect a USB device to any port, I get nothing.

Have the latest ASUS BIOS and the latest Intel chipset drivers installed as of now, still now luck. I'm out of ideas....

Anyone got some thoughts for me to try before I look into replacing the mobo?

It seems like you have done the whole procedure. Have you tried to remove USB devices from your Device Manager and let your system find them again? You probably fried your usb when mounting your USB drive?!

Yep, did the device manager bit with letting them be rediscovered. DM thinks the controllers are there and working perfectly, yet nothing will actually work on the USB ports. There is still power on the ports, but no comm 🙁

have the same borad, and this just happened to me last night. went to plug in my axim to sync, and everything stopped working. finally got the computer to re-boot, and still no luck with usb. device manager shows all the usb ports working fine, but they wont accept anything. any ideas?

I've seen this before with different mobos, you did everything right as far as troubleshooting. Sadly, it sounds like your USB controller bit the big one. Time to RMA that mobo or buy a 3rd party USB controller card. 🙁
