USB ports causing boot problems

I tried to install the two extra USB ports Asus provides with the motherboard, but whenever I install them, the computer starts freezing upon boot up - sometimes during POST and other times while Win XP is loading. I've tried it on USB 2 and 3, USB 1 has a card reader attached. Could the ports somehow be defective or miswired?

You have chipset drivers installed and positive that it is wired correctly?

The chipset drivers are installed, plus the card reader plugged into USB 1 and all the rear ports work fine. As for the wiring, I opened up the molding to make sure none of the soldered wires were touching. The color sequence on both ports were the same, so I assumed they are correct. While not impossible, it seems unlikely they are miswired. I was hoping there might be something stupid I overlooked, but at this point I think I need to trace all the wires to make sure.

I wouldn't dismiss the incorrectly wired ports on the case so fast. Would not surprise me that they were, esp. given your symptoms. And this wouldn't be the first or second time I've come across such a problem.

Good luck!

I'm not dismissing it too quickly; I once had to rewire a telephone jack T adaptor. I checked the wiring again, and everything looked correct, so I've reinstalled it for a fourth time and I've had no further problems.
